How to turn a sad day into a glad day using NLP

Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) techniques are incredibly effective and can make things better almost immediately, but what they do need is practise from you, and you have to WANT things to change. So it’s entirely up to you!

What to do if you wake up feeling low

If you wake up feeling low and the first thing you think is “I feel awful, I bet today is going to be rubbish!” that negative ‘self-talk’ is actually holding you back.  If you notice a pattern then replace the these thoughts with much more positive affirmations.  Reverse that thought, and instead when you wake up each morning, say “I feel great, and today I am going to have a fantastic day!”

How to change negative thoughts

When you think negative thoughts, you are the only one that is listening, and your brain begins to expect negative thoughts, so more follow.  By consciously changing your thoughts and repeating positive affirmations regularly throughout your day, and as you go to sleep at night you will rewire your brain to have many more upbeat thought patterns, and then your mood will improve too.

How to be kinder to yourself

Often our ‘self-talk’ is harsh, so allow yourself to ease up, stop being hard on yourself, be kind and perhaps think what you would say to a friend going through a difficult time.  Sit back and focus on ways to improve your day, the answers WILL come to you, allow yourself the time needed.

How to change your self-talk

Our internal dialogue impacts on our moods and in NLP the main emphasis is on the power of using positive thoughts to ‘reframe’ situations. For example, instead of saying, “I am a failure”, rephrase it, for example to “I have faced hard times from which I have grown and learned how to overcome setbacks”.  If you make a conscious decision to choose words that uplift you then you will quite quickly be able to shift yourself away from that low mood.

What is cognitive restructuring and how can it help with low moods?

Cognitive restructuring is a very simple yet effective NLP technique, and it involves looking more closely at your thoughts and restructuring them. When you’re in a low mood your mind tends to focus on negative thoughts, and interpret everything in a negative way.  So challenge these negative thoughts and turn them around into a more positive thought.  Ask yourself the question “Is this thought making me happy or is it actually making me sad?”. When you make a conscious shift in how you think, making your thoughts much more positive and realistic will help lift that low mood!

How to stop catastrophizing

Imagine a snowball rolling down a hill – that is how our thoughts are, and when you begin thinking negatively the overthinking begins, and before you know it there are more and more thoughts, and you can also begin to catastrophize.

At this point I would ask you, “can you see the future, do you have a crystal ball?” No? Then stop choosing the negative thought path, choose the positive one instead, it can work much better for you, the outcome is uplifting!

Simple steps for overcoming negative thoughts using NLP

Your head is your penthouse so you choose what you let in.  The NLP techniques I’ve mentioned above can work really well so keep your focus upbeat and leave yourself little reminders around the place:
