Today I want to talk to you about a different kind of addiction, one that I have used NLP techniques very successfully to treat, helping clients take back control – shopping! Neuro Linguistic Programming can give you tools to eradicate the overwhelming desire to ‘binge shop’, be it online or in stores.
During lockdown more and more people had to shop online, and that led to a lot of impulse buying, which then became a habit, leading into very real addiction. The knock-on effect of this is debt, problems with relationships and above all, self-loathing. All very unhealthy for our greater wellbeing.
How to deal with impulse buying
The first step is a factory reset using NLP techniques to make the client prioritise ‘need’ over ‘want’. Ask yourself the question “Do I need this?” and answer honestly. I actually used it myself when I lost my job and had to tighten my belt to prevent myself falling into debt while I rebuilt. It works, and you will surprise yourself at how much you spend on non-essentials, yet still live well.
I encourage my clients to think about what they would do if they had spare money, their ultimate dream holiday maybe, a new house, a new car. Things that have been previously out of reach, because there was literally no spare cash to be able to save……if the impulse shopping is curtailed, then the bigger, more important things, will become reachable, and this creates even more incentive in the client. NLP therapies use ‘positive outcomes’ as the key to any treatment. The case study below shows how the need to move house was a great focus for the client during their therapy.

This person got in touch with me recently:
“Hi Emma – I’ve finally got to admit that I have an addiction to online shopping. There are daily deliveries and I need to stop in order to achieve my dream of moving to the country. Is this something you can help me with?”
The short answer is YES, I saw them within the week as there was a degree of urgency to the situation, and I am over the moon to be able to now tell you that the NLP Therapy was 100% successful, and today I received this message:
“Hi Emma, just wanted to update you on my progress – 6 weeks after our Zoom session. I have sold lots of items on eBay that I don’t need, and I now have over £300 in my savings which I haven’t seen in so many years. Still plenty to sell on so that will only grow. I haven’t bought anything online that I didn’t need and I’m so proud of myself. Thank you so much – I still browse online occasionally but feel no urge to impulse buy, incredible xx “
